NHS England’s consultation to limit access to 17 procedures – why we should respond

NHSE is going to severely restrict access to 17 procedures on the NHS: four interventions that ‘should not be routinely commissioned, because they are ineffective or have been superseded by a safer alternative; with patients only able to access such treatments where they successfully make an Individual Funding Request’; and 13 interventions that ‘should only be commissioned or performed in specific circumstances where they have been proved to be clinically effective and specific criteria are met’.

NHSE is explicit that this is the start of a more widescale project:

We intend to make this a much wider, on-going programme, subject to making
sufficient progress in the first phase. We will consult on further interventions in
phase two, which will be launched in the new year. We will keep the list under
periodic review as the evidence base grows in future years. Phase two will also
include specialised services, which are commissioned by NHS England.

Please respond to let NHSE know your views

NHSE aims to save £200m per year – less than 0.2% of the NHS budget – and plans to build on this with numerous future restrictions to NHS care.

Even if this ‘consultation’ is flawed (the practice is already widespread) and motivation is financially-driven, it is still worth doing the survey – making the political point that the proposals have not gone unopposed.

It would also help if KONP members wrote letters to the press about it. The general public has little or no idea that this is happening.

  1. I don’t agree with any of your restrictions, and where is the evidence many of these don’t work..this is RATIONING once we let you greedy people cut anything it gets worse by the day…so NO My family have paid and paid for ALL health care to be available ..do your selves and the country a favour just resign ….go back to your private clinics and stay out of the NHS.

  2. if there was no merit in these cases, then they would never have been allowed in the 1st place! so leave our NHS alone!

  3. There is no need to restrict anything that is already in place, there is obviously a need. Thi Governments underfunding and hatred of the NHS is the root problem.

  4. Austerity is a lie – the aim of which is to enrich the private sector – Give us back Our NHS ! why are the adverts for pupa etc increasing– do you think we a stupid – corbyn4leader.blogspot.com explains the thievery .

  5. Not that you will take any notice of the public – you never do. You make decisions prior to any so called ” consultations”. Your consultations are a sham and all know it. In Devon I know you have closed 71% of all community inpatient beds without the publicsconsent! and many beds have been closed in our acute hospitals without even a nod to consultation and called reconfigurations! NHS England and your well paid henchmen on the CCGs are a one trick pony only knowing how to decommission, deprive and privatise. This is nothing other than defrauding the public of the fit for purpose NHS we have paid for and your government has no political mandate for your NHS destruction as it wasn’t in any party manifesto at the last election. What you are doing is despicable to deliberately cause suffering in the name of the NHS

  6. Ah, your (in)famous “public consultations”. For your consultation for the North of England, we had so little notice that only as handful could get there – but we still managed to debunk just about everything that was said! And if there’s one thing we’ve learned from dealing with neoliberals, it’s to think “thin end of the wedge” every time.
And let’s not forget that those waiting in agony will have to either go private (IF they can actually afford it…), or suffer so much that perhaps their mental health will nose dive, adding further weight to an already over loaded MH service.
This is rationing – and you can find whatever euphemistic nonsense you wish to try to rationalise this. But we know….

  8. The way these cut-backs have affected our elderly, vulnerable, young, disabled and those suffering mental health is appealing. Suicide rates are so high and yet no one looks into it or is held accountable for this devistation. People in beds lined up in coridoors seems to be acceptable but it’s not, this has lead to hatred towards vulnerable people with mental health issues, hatred towards any person whom is not white. Propaganda has put blame on the wrong people and it’s time it was portrayed truthfully.
No person using our NHS is to blame, the people whom are to blame are those that are selling off and cutting the support we need to survive. LEAVE OUR NHS ALONE and stop cutting services, your killing people.

  9. I have paid for my health care through my taxes all my life as did my parents and as are my children. This government has underfunded the NHS by approximately 3% per GDP per year for the last 8 years. As if that isn’t enough it’s selling off OUR Hospital assets at less than market value and using taxpayers money to support that! WE SEE WHAT YOU ARE DOING! WE DISSAGREE AND WANT OUR NHS BACK!

  10. The NHS has saved my mother many times over. Will it still be available for my sisters and I? My local hospital already has an average seven or eight hour wait at accident and emergency. Our people fought hard for free health care and we still have one to be proud of. So get your thriving hands off it!

  11. In trying to remove 17 procedures from the NHS that have previously been approved you are undermining the clinical judgement Of NHS Doctors as Well as trying to ration treatments
We pay for the NHS through are taxes and are therefore entitled to the treatments we need. Health in the UK must not become another money making venture for the private companies and pharmaceutical multi nationals. Keep private companies out of the NHS and our healthcare.
