SUMMARY:Bristol Protect Our NHS protests against Tory corruption\, croynism and privatisation
DESCRIPTION:On Friday 11 December Protect Our NHS at 11AM will hold a protest outside the Weston Super Mare constituency office of John Penrose\, the government’s Anti-Corruption Champion to flag the role of his partner\, Dido Harding\, who oversees the £12 billion test and trace programme. Members of the group will unveil a banner which says – John Penrose\, Anti-Corruption Champion\, how did your unqualified wife Dido Harding get her unadvertised job as head of Test and Trace. \nThe protest is part of an ongoing effort to draw attention to the government’s unsavoury practice of awarding contracts to private firms\, such as Serco\, Sitel and Deloitte\, with close political and personal ties with government ministers and advisors without adhering to any well-established tendering process. Other groups such as Keep Our NHS Public\, Open Democracy and We Own it have been campaigning on the issue\, especially underscoring the wasteful spending of taxpayers’ money on companies which fail to deliver on the 80% testing and tracing target. \nAccordingly Protect Our NHS is making the following demands: \n● End the cronyism and corruption in the awarding of COVID-19 contracts; \n● Sack Serco and other private companies running the incompetent test and trace system. Instead give the money to local public health authorities which have a far better track record in carrying out testing and tracing functions; and \n● Call on the relevant Parliamentary Committee to hold hearings on the government’s awarding of COVID-19 related contracts.

SUMMARY:Zero Covid National Day of Action
DESCRIPTION:Zero Covid Campaign have called a national day of action on Saturday 5 December \nAS ENGLISH LOCKDOWN ENDS: DAY OF ACTION ON 5 DEC FOR MORE EFFECTIVE MEASURES \nDoctors\, scientists\, students and trade unionists are planning coordinated protests across Britain on Saturday 5 December to protest the UK government’s reckless return to regional tier measures and to demand a Zero Covid strategy. It will be many months before most UK citizens are vaccinated\, and there is not yet evidence whether the vaccines prevent transmission as well as protecting against illness\, so more effective measures are needed to reduce community infection near to zero. This would save lives and livelihoods\, and avoid on-off lockdowns dragging on for months. Key figures from the British Medical Association and the Independent SAGE panel of expert scientists\, workplace safety campaign Hazards\, the President of the National Union of Students\, the General Secretary of the train drivers’ union ASLEF and the food manufacturing Bakers’ Union and a raft of local trade union bodies backed the call. \nYou can find a full list of events here.

SUMMARY:What's going on: we aren't ready for a winter crisis
DESCRIPTION:Please join this important meeting to discuss whether we’re actually to handle a coronavirus ‘second surge’ along side the now annual ‘winter crisis’.\n\n\n\nPlease register for the event here: https://us02web.zoom.us/…/reg…/WN_g2G7CVD_Tm22qdzWMEpW2A\n\n\n\nSpeakers inlude:\nAllyson Pollock – Public health doctor (KONP)\nKaren McDougall – Nurse and NSV member\nHelen O’xConnor – GMB organiser in the NHS\nElly Badcock – Occupational Therapist and NSV member\n\n\nThe ongoing coronavirus crisis has been devastating. Much of the lethal impact on lives and livelihoods could easily have been avoided if our Government had taken the appropriate steps in time. Instead\, they dithered and avoided responsibility and put all our lives at risk. Their strategy has been one of ‘herd immunity’ in all but name\, and prioritising profit over the safety of ordinary people. The Government has slashed funding\, privatised services and mismanaged the NHS prior to the current crisis. Its handling of the crisis has been shameful\, privately run test and trace a total failure. Its policy of discharging Covid-19 patients back into care homes (frequently a death sentence for our elderly and most vulnerable)\, and excluding nurses and other frontline staff from the latest public sector pay rise announcements\, (while MP’s are to be awarded a further £3\,300 pa pay rise) are more examples of their callous attitude. While infection rates soar once more in a ‘second surge’\, (a situation aggravated by the Government’s re-opening of schools\, workplaces\, restaurants and universities) the approaching crisis will hit during winter. As Keep Our NHS Public and other campaign groups\, including the British Red Cross have been arguing for years\, the regular ‘winter crisis’ in our NHS\, is nothing short of a ‘humanitarian disaster’ in its own right. The consequences of Covid-19 peaking again during winter months will be dire. Many more will lose their lives unnecessarily.

SUMMARY:End the Social Care Crisis Conference
DESCRIPTION:SATURDAY OCTOBER 10 – 11:00am – 1:00 pm \nJoin us to hear from a range of speakers discussing the crisis in social care and other services. Learn how Covid exposed the shocking state of healthcare\, social care and supported living\, and find out more about our proposal for a National Care Support and Independent Living Service. \nRegister for the event here \nSpeakers include:\nJohn McDonnell MP\nJan Shortt General Secretary\, National Pensioners Convention\nStephen Cowan\, Leader of Hammersmith and Fulham Council\nSandra Daniels and Bob Williams-Findlay\, disability rights activists\nHeather Wakefield\, ex-Unison and Women’s Budget Group\nRachel Harrison\, GMB Public Services National Officer\nMore TBA \nRegister today and get involved with the discussion here \nAfter registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting. \nThe pandemic has exposed the neglect\, injustice and exclusion in our Social Care system. Lives have been casually devalued. Large\, often remote residential units or chains\, designed to max profit rather than provide what people need and want have heightened risk; while what fragmented\, severely rationed support at home remains after wholesale privatisation and 50 % cuts to Local Authority budgets falls dangerously short of meeting even basic needs. \nWe believe in a radical reform of social care provision in Britain.  \nThis means we support the demand for a national care service that incorporates ‘care\, support & and that includes support for independent living as a principle. We’re working towards a National Care\, Support & Independent Living Service.\n \nThis would necessarily have to be: \n\nPublicly funded\, free at the point of use\nPublicly provided\, not for profit\nNationally mandated but designed and delivered locally\nCo-produced with service users and democratically accountable\nUnderpinned by staff whose pay and conditions reflect true value & skills\nMeet the needs of informal carers\nInclude the Setting up an independent living task force\n\nThis event is hosted by Keep Our NHS Public and The Socialist Health Association and supported by Reclaim Social Care\, Health Campaigns Together\, GMB\, National Pensioners Convention\, Reclaim Our Futures Alliance of Disabled People’s Organisations.

SUMMARY:Sussex Defend the NHS: How come we didn't know? #2
DESCRIPTION:This is an online event – register here. \nSceptical about the Government response to the Covid-19 pandemic? Concerned what has been happening to the NHS? This is your chance to find out what has really been going on\, to ask those questions which won’t be answered elsewhere\, to share your ideas and thoughts with others. \nGovernment exploitation of the crisis for its own ends is mind-boggling. Contracts for the Nightingale hospitals\, provision of PPE various versions of tracking and testing arrangements have been handed out wholesale to private sector companies and with usual fail-safe arrangements suspended. Some of those contracts have gone disastrously wrong with little or no publicity. \nThis second session is a follow on from the first and focuses on the NHS Test & Trace service\, the NHS Test & Trace app and the digitisation of the NHS. \nFor all those who care what is happening to our NHS and the erosion of our democracy. Different viewpoints are welcome. \nThe workshop will be presented by Megan from Free University Brighton working in partnership with Sussex Defend the NHS.

SUMMARY:Why a US/UK Trade Deal must be opposed
DESCRIPTION:This is an online meeting held over Zoom. Details to join can be found below. \nSpeakers: \n\nJean Blaylock\, campaign and policy manager from Global Justice Now\nNikki Dancy\, GMB Regional Organiser\nGay Lee\, Keep Our NHS Public\n\nOur campaign is urgent because this trade deal could be done by Christmas. Corporations are lobbying hard because it could give them everything they want. Our voices need to be heard. Research reveals that these corporations are looking to maximise their profit even if that means lowering food standards\, weakening chemical regulation\, increasing medicine prices and stopping attempts to regulate the financial market. The infamous Pharma lobby has also been open that it wants to stop the NHS capping outrageous medicine prices\, and a US-UK trade deal might just be how it gets its way. \nHow can we challenge this\, and other toxic trade deals? This meeting will give us an opportunity to think about a positive way forward. \nJean has been involved with trade and food campaigning for over 15 years and will be able to give us an up-to-date picture of what is happening with the trade negotiations. Nikki will give us an idea of how the trade deal would affect workers’ rights and Gay Lee will be able to speak about the NHS. There will also be an opportunity to ask questions and to find out how we can campaign on this issue. \n————————————- \nMEETING DETAILS \nTo join Zoom Meeting: \nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/81336709050?pwd=WU1XT2Z2UWQ3OTNib3MrOVhrMVBSdz09 \n\nMeeting ID: 813 3670 9050\nPasscode: justice

SUMMARY:Sussex Defend the NHS: How come we didn't know? #1
\nFor all those who care what is happening to our NHS and the erosion of our democracy. Different viewpoints are welcome. \nThe workshop will be presented by Valerie and Madeleine from Sussex Defend the NHS working in partnership with the Free University Brighton.

SUMMARY:Meeting | KONP North East | Trade Bill: The campaign continues
DESCRIPTION:The Trade Bill has progressed through the House of Commons unamended\, which means the NHS is still on the table.  This trade deal could lock in current and future privatisation\, making it impossible to reverse\, as well as opening doors to ever-spiralling drug costs. Future governments trying to reduce or remove privatisation could be faced with expensive legal challenges from US healthcare companies and the risk of massive fines. \nThere is still a chance that the House of Lords can amend the Bill – we have booked this Zoom meeting to discuss our campaign options.  Please join us to see how you can help in the fight for our NHS. \nZoom meeting code: 853 2743 9935\nPassword: Lords

SUMMARY:Joint affiliates meeting: Health Campaigns Together & Keep Our NHS Public
DESCRIPTION:This NHS anniversary weekend just past\, we not only marked the moment with successful nationwide and online events\, giving an often-poignant response to the Government’s continued mishandling of the current pandemic. We also launched our ‘2020 Vision’ for the NHS. \nThe ‘Rescue Plan’\, written by John Lister\, sets out our vision to rebuild health and social care starting now. \nThe Covid-19 global pandemic has revealed – or at least\, laid bare\, many inadequacies\, inequalities and injustices in the way our society is run\, with perhaps the clearest example coming from the shockingly high death toll in BME communities\, who are disproportionately represented in many of the lowest-paid and most hazardous front line jobs. \nBut the crisis has also shown in detail much of what Health Campaigns Together\, Keep Our NHS Public and other NHS activists have been saying all along\, in many cases for years before the coronavirus outbreak; that the NHS is dangerously underfunded\, understaffed and that if we are to save our NHS from total ruination by the current Government\, we must win the arguments that privatisation is harmful for the NHS – both for its staff (especially those outsourced to private companies working for the NHS) and dangerous\, even occasionally lethal\, for its patients. \nThat’s why we have called a joint Health Campaigns Together and Keep Our NHS Public affiliates meeting\, to work closely together to hone our 2020 Vision\, to make sure we have the best rescue plan possible and pool our resources to put it into practice. Delegates can attend from organisations affiliated to either organisation. \nYou can read the full ‘Rescue Plan’ in its current draft here: https://healthcampaignstogether.com/2020Vision.php \nAnd a summary on the Keep Our NHS Public website here: https://keepournhspublic.com/nhs-2020-vision/ \n\n

SUMMARY:Screening: Under the Knife
DESCRIPTION:Organised by Just Treatment. Click here to register.\n \nJoin us as we collectively watch the NHS documentary film\, ‘Under the Knife’. The film will end with a short discussion on what we need to do next in order to stop and reverse NHS privatisation. There will also be an update on the progress made and next steps with the NHS New Deal. \nUnder the Knife delves into the changes to the law in 2012 which have left the NHS open to large scale privatisation. Interviews with over fifty clinicians\, patients\, journalists and politicians paint a vivid and shocking picture of the state of our NHS and reinforce why we must bring about a New Deal. \nSuggestions on how to stop and reverse NHS privatisation will directly feed into the demands for the NHS New Deal

SUMMARY:March for Pay Justice for NHS & Key workers
DESCRIPTION:Facebook event here.\n \nSocially distanced protest – wear a mask! \nAssemble at St Thomas Hospital from 5pm\, march to Downing Street at 6pm. All welcome. \nNHS workers have been criminally let down by this government. Despite all our sacrifices\, the government has not included us in the pay deal for public sector workers. \nWe have worked masses of overtime\, isolated from our families\, and lost over 540 of our colleagues to COVID-19. And we are not valued. \nWe are calling on all NHS workers in London to join us for a *socially distanced* protest to demand pay justice for all NHS workers and key workers. \nNHS workers deserve a pay rise for the 20% pay cut since 2010. We need a pay rise to address the 40\,000 vacancies across the NHS that puts our patients at risk. We need a pay rise because of a decade of austerity. \nWe need the government to act now to show they value NHS staff\, before we face a second wave. Demoralised and underpaid staff won’t be able to protect and care for patients through a second wave. \nWe are supporting the protest on August 8th\, but want to mobilise people now to pressure the government and demand they increase all NHS workers and key workers pay.
