SUMMARY:Meeting | KONP North East | Trade Bill: The campaign continues
DESCRIPTION:The Trade Bill has progressed through the House of Commons unamended\, which means the NHS is still on the table.  This trade deal could lock in current and future privatisation\, making it impossible to reverse\, as well as opening doors to ever-spiralling drug costs. Future governments trying to reduce or remove privatisation could be faced with expensive legal challenges from US healthcare companies and the risk of massive fines. \nThere is still a chance that the House of Lords can amend the Bill – we have booked this Zoom meeting to discuss our campaign options.  Please join us to see how you can help in the fight for our NHS. \nZoom meeting code: 853 2743 9935\nPassword: Lords

SUMMARY:Joint affiliates meeting: Health Campaigns Together & Keep Our NHS Public
DESCRIPTION:This NHS anniversary weekend just past\, we not only marked the moment with successful nationwide and online events\, giving an often-poignant response to the Government’s continued mishandling of the current pandemic. We also launched our ‘2020 Vision’ for the NHS. \nThe ‘Rescue Plan’\, written by John Lister\, sets out our vision to rebuild health and social care starting now. \nThe Covid-19 global pandemic has revealed – or at least\, laid bare\, many inadequacies\, inequalities and injustices in the way our society is run\, with perhaps the clearest example coming from the shockingly high death toll in BME communities\, who are disproportionately represented in many of the lowest-paid and most hazardous front line jobs. \nBut the crisis has also shown in detail much of what Health Campaigns Together\, Keep Our NHS Public and other NHS activists have been saying all along\, in many cases for years before the coronavirus outbreak; that the NHS is dangerously underfunded\, understaffed and that if we are to save our NHS from total ruination by the current Government\, we must win the arguments that privatisation is harmful for the NHS – both for its staff (especially those outsourced to private companies working for the NHS) and dangerous\, even occasionally lethal\, for its patients. \nThat’s why we have called a joint Health Campaigns Together and Keep Our NHS Public affiliates meeting\, to work closely together to hone our 2020 Vision\, to make sure we have the best rescue plan possible and pool our resources to put it into practice. Delegates can attend from organisations affiliated to either organisation. \nYou can read the full ‘Rescue Plan’ in its current draft here: https://healthcampaignstogether.com/2020Vision.php \nAnd a summary on the Keep Our NHS Public website here: https://keepournhspublic.com/nhs-2020-vision/ \n\n

SUMMARY:Screening: Under the Knife
DESCRIPTION:Organised by Just Treatment. Click here to register.\n \nJoin us as we collectively watch the NHS documentary film\, ‘Under the Knife’. The film will end with a short discussion on what we need to do next in order to stop and reverse NHS privatisation. There will also be an update on the progress made and next steps with the NHS New Deal. \nUnder the Knife delves into the changes to the law in 2012 which have left the NHS open to large scale privatisation. Interviews with over fifty clinicians\, patients\, journalists and politicians paint a vivid and shocking picture of the state of our NHS and reinforce why we must bring about a New Deal. \nSuggestions on how to stop and reverse NHS privatisation will directly feed into the demands for the NHS New Deal

SUMMARY:March for Pay Justice for NHS & Key workers
DESCRIPTION:Facebook event here.\n \nSocially distanced protest – wear a mask! \nAssemble at St Thomas Hospital from 5pm\, march to Downing Street at 6pm. All welcome. \nNHS workers have been criminally let down by this government. Despite all our sacrifices\, the government has not included us in the pay deal for public sector workers. \nWe have worked masses of overtime\, isolated from our families\, and lost over 540 of our colleagues to COVID-19. And we are not valued. \nWe are calling on all NHS workers in London to join us for a *socially distanced* protest to demand pay justice for all NHS workers and key workers. \nNHS workers deserve a pay rise for the 20% pay cut since 2010. We need a pay rise to address the 40\,000 vacancies across the NHS that puts our patients at risk. We need a pay rise because of a decade of austerity. \nWe need the government to act now to show they value NHS staff\, before we face a second wave. Demoralised and underpaid staff won’t be able to protect and care for patients through a second wave. \nWe are supporting the protest on August 8th\, but want to mobilise people now to pressure the government and demand they increase all NHS workers and key workers pay.

SUMMARY:Protest: Stop relocation of acute services in South London
DESCRIPTION:Join patients\, staff and campaigners outside St Helier Hospital in South London to protect plans to merge hospital services during the pandemic. The proposed restructuring would centralise life-saving services in locations unreachable for many patients\, resulting in more deaths of patients in transit. This is the first in a series of protests and actions supported by GMB union as well as community groups and health campaigners. \nThe protest will be held in the green space opposite the hospital. \nRead more about the issues here.

SUMMARY:NATIONAL RALLY: Our NHS Deserves Better
DESCRIPTION:Over the first weekend of  July\, we are marking the anniversary of the founding of our NHS with a wide variety of events\, protests\, rallies and meetings around the country. At 3:30pm on Sunday 5th July this will culminate in a huge national online rally organised by Keep Our NHS Public\, Health Campaigns Together\, The People’s Assembly Against Austerity and We Own It. \nThis will be too large for Zoom registrations – the rally can be viewed on the Facebook page or the YouTube channel of Keep Our NHS Public or any of the other organisations above. \n> FIND OUT MORE ABOUT THE WEEKEND HERE\n> SEE LOCAL EVENTS NEAR YOU \nSPEAKERS INCLUDE: \nDr Sonia Adesara (Keep Our NHS Public)\, Cat Hobbs (We Own It)\, Helen O’Conner (GMB)\, John Lister (Health Campaigns Together)\, Dr Kambiz Boomla (Doctors in Unite)\, Kevin Courtney (National Education Union)\, Laura Ho (Build Back Better)\, Laura Pidcock (People’s Assembly)\, Rachel Ambrose (mental health nurse) and Roger McKenzie (Unison); more TBA \nOUR DEMANDS: \nCovid-19 has exposed what’s wrong with healthcare after decades of cuts\, privatisation and fragmentation. In the ‘spirit of 2020’\, it’s time to rebuild and go much further. We are demanding: \n\nRebuild and properly fund the NHS\nProper pay and respect for all NHS and care staff\nEnd racism in the NHS and end all migrant charges\nNHS out of all Trade Deals\nPublic Health back in public hands\nGo further: Radical reform of social care\n\nClick here to read our full “2020 Vision” to rebuild our health and social care system. \nHOW TO WATCH: the rally can be viewed on the Facebook page or the YouTube channel of Keep Our NHS Public or any of the other co-hosting organisations (Health Campaigns Together\, the People’s Assembly Against Austerity\, and We Own It. \n——————————————————– \nSunday the 5th July is the 72nd anniversary of the NHS. It was created in the aftermath of World War II\, (a conflict that saw 67\,100 British civilians killed) to create something better for us all. \nDuring the coronavirus crisis in 2020\, NHS and Social Care workers have been called upon to work on the frontline to keep us safe. They have often had to work without proper resources and PPE\, within an already failing system. Many have been forced to sacrifice their lives. In the UK we have now reached the frightening number of excess deaths linked to coronavirus of 64\,000 (up to 28 May 2020)\, the second-highest death toll in the world. The NHS deserves better\, we all deserve better. \nThis is a damning indictment of recent Government policy and its mishandling of our NHS. When we emerge from this deadly crisis\, this can no longer be tolerated. This is also a critical moment when the systemic inequalities in our society are starker than ever. We therefore demand an immediate end to the Hostile Environment\, all migrant charging stopped and an urgent investigation into the disproportionate death toll in Britain’s BAME community during this pandemic. Likewise\, the many disadvantages placed on disabled people and others with additional needs has never been clearer. We believe this moment gives us a unique opportunity to demand we not only rebuild the NHS but go much further and call for radical reform of social care provision.

SUMMARY:What's going on: Fatal inequalities and Covid-19
DESCRIPTION:Speakers:\nGary Younge – Journalist and campaigner\nDame Donna Kinnair – General Secretary of the Royal College of Nursing\nDr Sonia Adesara – Keep Our NHS Public and NHS Staff Voices \nRace and inequality have a significant effect on covid-19 outcomes for workers\, in fact black and asian people are up to 4 times more likely to die from covid-19 than white people. Despite this\, they are also the workers being forced onto the frontline. Many BAME workers feel unable to demand safer working conditions for fear of disciplinary action or losing their job\, and this is in an institution that is already showing contempt and disregard for their lives. In light of recent threats to end lockdown before it is safe\, our second public meeting will be centred around the effects of inequality and race in the NHS\, and in particular\, during this pandemic. \nLINK TO REGISTER TO JOIN THE MEETING THROUGH ZOOM: \nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_6dxTGgXhRLSA6H49hzXSTA

SUMMARY:Under the Knife: free festival of screenings
DESCRIPTION:As the coronavirus pandemic throws a spotlight on the strains and pressure on our National Health Service\, we are arranging a festival of free screenings of Under the Knife\, a film by Pam Kleinot which meticulously documents the long process of privatisation and under-funding that our NHS has been subject to in recent years. \n\n\n \n\n\nKeep Our NHS Public Co-Chair Tony O’Sullivan says:\n\n\n \n\n\n“This is the best film around on the NHS. UNDER THE KNIFE shows the vital importance of the NHS to society and exposes the dark threats facing it. But most important of all\, the film gives hope to those who are campaigning to keep the NHS safe for our children. You just have to see it.”\n\n\n \n\n\nYou can watch the trailer and find out more here: https://undertheknifefilm.co.uk\n\n\n \n\n\nThe film will be available to watch online here from Tuesday 5 May to Sunday 10 May midnight. Allyson Pollock and John Lister are both highly regarded academics\, authors\, journalists and campaigners who have dedicated their careers to fighting for the NHS. Dr Sonia Adesara from Keep Our NHS Public is a frontline doctor during the current crisis and an advocate for a properly resourced\, publicly owned and publicly run NHS. \nJoin us to hear what they have to say and a following Q&A session in which you’ll have the chance to ask the panel about what’s really going on. \nWe will also be announcing a Festival of Screenings of the Under The Knife documentary and are pleased to have the film’s producer Pam Kleinot telling us about why she made the film and how you can watch it.

SUMMARY:Homerton Hospital open meeting of the board
DESCRIPTION:On 19th February an important meeting of the Board is taking place at Homerton Hospital. \nMembers of the public are allowed to attend and ask questions. There are pressing issues around staff at the Hospital outsourced to agency firm ISS\, who are already owed over 2 years worth of back pay. Most staff at ISS get no occupational sick pay\, so no pay at all for first 3 days of illness\, and many staff cannot afford to take time off\, so they have to go to work in the hospital even when they are ill. \nContact Marion Macalpine at marion.macalpine@blueyonder.co.uk if you need more information about attending.
