SUMMARY:Vigil: counting the cost of the Hostile Environment in the NHS
DESCRIPTION:October 23rd will be the second anniversary of the expansion of up-front charging and ID checks across the NHS. This is an aspect of the so-called “Hostile Environment”\, a policy framework that aims to inflict fear and insecurity on migrants in Britain and make swathes of the workforce\, like health workers and education staff\, complicit in racist border enforcement. \nOn 23 October we will commemorate those who have died and suffered\, and those who are currently suffering\, as a result of these policies. Join us to demand an end to all forms of immigration control in our health service and universal healthcare for all. \nOn the morning\, there will be a direct action a Central London location (more details to follow soon). \nFrom 16:30 – 21:00\, there will be vigils outside at least two hospitals in London\, Lewisham Hospital and one in Central London (site to be confirmed). \nOther events are happening across the country\, such as in Bristol\, in Manchester and in Birmingham. Groups involved include Docs Not Cops\, MedAct and many others as well as local Keep Our NHS Public groups.

SUMMARY:Under the Knife: free screenings nationwide!
DESCRIPTION:SEE BELOW FOR DETAILS OF THE INDIVIDUAL SCREENINGS AROUND THE COUNTRY \nUnder the Knife is a new film from veteran medical journalist Pam Kleinot and award-winning director Susan Steinberg. Casting an eye over the history of the NHS\, the efforts of successive recent governments to privatise the service\, and the grass-roots campaigners who are fighting back\, the film is a powerful and penetrating 90-minute experience. You can view a trailer for the film here. \nTony O’Sullivan\, Co-Chair of Keep Our NHS Public\, says: \n“This is the best film around on the NHS. UNDER THE KNIFE shows the vital importance of the NHS to society and exposes the dark threats facing it. But most important of all\, the film gives hope to those who are campaigning to keep the NHS safe for our children. You just have to see it.” \nThe filmmakers are working with Keep Our NHS Public local groups around the country to plan an ambitious programme of around 20 launch screenings up and down the country in the week commencing 14 October\, partnering with varied trade unions\, health campaigners and local organisations. These screenings are intended to be free for NHS workers\, health campaigners\, pensioners and medical students. \nIf you’d be interested in putting on a screening in your community\, we’d love to hear from you. Email us at campaigns@keepournhspublic.com to get in touch! \n——————————————————————————– \nSCREENINGS \nThis listing will be updated with more screenings and with more precise information over the next few weeks. SUMMARY:The World Transformed: NHS for the 21st Century
DESCRIPTION:We are delighted to be appearing at this year’s “The World Transformed” festival in Brighton! \n“Universal\, equitable\, comprehensive\, high quality\, free at the point of delivery\, publicly funded and publicly accountable. But how does the NHS look now 71 years on? Underfunding and rampant privatisation are fast eroding its founding principles and we don’t have much time left to act. Join us to explore what Labour’s plan should be for the NHS of the 21st Century. \nThis is part of our ‘Manifesto for the Movement’ project. Over the course of the four days\, hundreds of festival attendees in collaboration with policy experts will build a ‘Manifesto For The Movement’ – a radical document that will be presented to MPs at the end of the festival. Get involved in any TWT Policy Lab to be a part of this.” \nSpeakers: \nLouise Irvine – GP and NHS campaigner\, Keep Our NHS Public \nJean Hardiman Smith – healthcare and social care activist\, ethicist\, and Honorary Secretary of the Socialist Health Association \nKeith Venables – NHS activist and trade unionist\, working with Health Campaigns Together\, Keep Our NHS Public\, and the Labour Party\, among others

SUMMARY:Solidarity rally - supporting striking NHS workers!
DESCRIPTION:After 3 weeks of strike action\, the UNISON members at Bradford District Hospital have heroically voted for indefinite strike action in opposition to the Trust’s plans to transfer ALL ancillary and support staff into a wholly owned subsidiary company (WOSC). The strike begins on Monday 26th August from 6am onwards. \nThis strike has now assumed huge importance (read the I News report here). The government plan to allow NHS regulators to begin breaking up the NHS workforce into privatised segments is very quickly unravelling. These plans have already been pushed back in most Trusts thanks to determined union resistance. A victory for the Bradford strikers could see the whole mad scheme thrown in the bin. \nThe picket lines have been very well supported from Day One. The strikers are united\, determined and confident but they need our support for this next critical stage of the dispute. \nHealth Campaigns Together is calling on all our supporters and affiliates to join the solidarity rally on the first day of the strike. We need messages of support and your banners and placards. We are appealing to you all to make the special effort to join us. The NHS is not for sale! \nIf you would like to travel by train to Bradford on Monday morning\, please email konpnortheast@gmail.com\, to meet up with KONP North East members. \nIf you can’t make the rally\, you can always donate to the striking workers hardship fund by sending a bank transfer to: \nName: Unity Trust\nSort Code: 608301\nAccount Number: 49021215 \nOr a cheque to: \nBradford Health Services Branch \nUnison Office\nField House\nBradford Royal Infirmary\nDuckworth Lane\nBradford\nBD9 6RJ \n

SUMMARY:Court of Appeal: defend NHS services in Dorset!
DESCRIPTION:Campaigners from Defend Dorset NHS will be outside the Royal Courts of Justice on the Strand tomorrow morning\, showing the government and the judiciary that we won’t stand for the proposed cuts and closures to services in Dorset. Come down and show support! \nNot only are local health authorities looking to divest Poole Hospital of vital A&E and Maternity services\, but cuts or closures are threatened to 6 out of 13 of Dorset’s other community hospitals and health sites. This can only mean more deaths and needless health complications for patients in rural areas\, who will be forced to travel long distances to centralised care locations. \nYou can find the Facebook event here.

SUMMARY:Solidarity protest with Food Service Assistants at St Thomas' Hospital
DESCRIPTION:Food Service Assistants play a crucial role in NHS patient care\, keeping patients fed and looked-after. Assistants at St Thomas’ Hospital are campaigning againstlow pay\, bullying and zero-hour contracts – and against the forced out-sourcing of services to private providers that enables NHS bosses to keep this exploitation hidden. \nHealth campaigners have every reason to attend and show solidarity with St Thomas’ workers who are taking a stand for their jobs and conditions and against the increasing privatisation and fragmentation of our NHS. Join the protest at the Westminster Bridge entrance of the Hospital at 13:30 on Thursday 13 June.

SUMMARY:Still our NHS?
DESCRIPTION:Little by little\, successive governments have chipped away at our NHS\, selling services off to private providers piece by piece. \nCommissioners in Gloucestershire are assembling a single large contract entailing the right to provide a mix of key services over a period of years. County services are being packaged in a way that leaves them open to being sold off to large US healthcare conglommerates\, which will cut back NHS services to drive up their own profit margins – just as they do in the US itself. \nOn 8 June\, join us in Gloucester Guildhall to hear 3 NHS doctors speak on the threat to our NHS today\, and the attempt to roll out US-style private healthcare in Britain by stealth.

SUMMARY:Protest: protect our NHS in Bristol!
DESCRIPTION:Adult community services in Bristol\, North Somerset & South Gloucestershire (BNSSG) are up for grabs! \nA ten-year  contract amounting to over £1 billion is about to awarded to provide these essential  health services\, including those which focus on diabetes\, learning disabilities and Parkinson’s disease among others. We do not know who is bidding for this: it could be NHS services\, community ventures or private companies like Virgin Care seeking to profit from patients’ ill health and support needs. \nCome along on Friday 31 May and join us in protesting the secrecy of the tendering process and the risk that these vital duties of care will be outsourced to profit-making\, poor-performing firms in the private sector! \nPlease come along\, with your own banner if you can pointing out the secrecy involved\, making it clear to local residents that these decisions are taking place\, asking the Clinical Commissiniong Group who the bidders are\, and pointing to the danger of a privatisation of the service. We will have leaflets to hand out and our general PONHS banners and information.
