Government policy allowed Covid-19 to run rampant through our care homes while we weren’t given adequate PPE to protect ourselves and our service users. Hundreds of us made the ultimate sacrifice and lost our lives from a virus we contracted at our workplaces. \nDespite our commitment to a job that we love\, 18 months from the beginning of the Covid-19 crisis we are still struggling with a lack of sick pay\, poverty wages and empty promises. We’ve faced setbacks to our already struggling sector including the right to minimum wage on sleep in shifts and mandatory vaccinations. We want change. It’s time for care workers to clap back. \nWe are calling for a national demonstration during Professional Care Workers Week. We are a skilled workforce and our wages should reflect that. DESCRIPTION:Register in advance for this meeting:\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZctdu6uqT4pHtIBCUss57hGJHx-lm7fqK7e\n\n \nCare and Support Workers ORGANISE! are hosting a meeting on mandatory vaccinations following the recent debate in parliament and the government’s decision to implement new regulations instructing that everyone working in CQC-registered care homes must be fully COVID-19 vaccinated with both doses or face losing their jobs.\n\n \nThe new legislation means from October – subject to Parliamentary approval and a subsequent 16-week grace period – anyone working in a CQC-registered care home in England for residents requiring nursing or personal care must have 2 doses of a COVID-19 vaccine unless they have a medical exemption.\n\n \nThen-Health Secretary Matt Hancock said it was a “sensible and reasonable step” and he would consult on extending it to the NHS.\n\n \nThe “liberty of non-vaccination” is a principle established in UK law since 1898. DESCRIPTION:A striking feature of the government’s pandemic response has been the contracting out of Covid-related services to private companies. This has been without the usual tendering processes and without any transparency around contract details including costs. Despite a number of contracts failing spectacularly (e.g. Serco’s contract to run NHS Test-and-Trace) and some pre-Covid contracts such as that with NHS Logistics being exposed as wholly inadequate\, public contract funding has been differentially awarded to Conservative party donors and close contacts. \nWe will hear about the reliance on and scale of private contracts during the pandemic\, and the level of pre-pandemic outsourcing and privatisation. Even prior to the pandemic there was strong evidence that racism and inequality in educational\, employment and economic opportunities\, as well as in access to housing and healthcare\, had major differential effects on the health of BAME communities. These issues were compounded during the pandemic\, with particularly acute consequences for keyworkers who could not work at home\, and who kept transport\, health and other essential services running throughout. The impacts of Covid have also fallen differentially on women in many important ways. \nThe next session of the People’s Covid Inquiry asks: was there any serious appraisal of risk for sections of our society who experience inequalities and discrimination? What has the outcome been and how has the Government responded? \nIn order to answer these questions and to learn lessons\, in this session we are listening to a researcher on the differential impact of Covid on the BAME health workers and we will hear testimony about the experience of BAME frontline staff and the differential impacts of Covid-19 upon migrants and upon women. DESCRIPTION:It became very clear at the outset of the pandemic that the UK Government needed to radically reappraise the roles of key workers in society. Our inquiry asks: were the roles of key workers and the risks they faced understood; and were they supported and protected? Were employment conditions\, in-work poverty and health and safety at work given adequate consideration by the Government? \n\n\nIn order to answer these questions we will hear the evidence of frontline staff working in the NHS\, in care services\, transport and education. SUMMARY:Children's mental health and the Covid crisis
DESCRIPTION:Over the past year\, much of our time and energy has been rightly consumed by the Covid crisis. However\, the NHS has faced a number of other crises that must now be addressed more actively. Young people have been struggling to access effective mental health support for a long time. Even before Covid-19 arrived\, more than 100\,000 young people were being turned away from Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) every year. Over the past year\, this number has risen exponentially. Many children are now turning to adverse coping strategies\, where others are unfortunately not coping at all. \nThe CAMHS crisis encapsulates the overarching struggles of society in general. These include education\, the difficulties faced by families and parents and staffing issues – particularly the devastating impact of understaffing. This meeting aims to bring together the many elements in our society that can adversely impact children and subsequently wider society.\n\nPlease join us for the discussion.\n\n*NSV public meetings will now take the form of interactive meetings where all are attendees are welcome to actively contribute.*
