SUMMARY:G7: drop the patents\, save lives
DESCRIPTION:From organisers:\n\n“Global Justice Now will be protest outside of the Department of International Trade in London from 10 am to 11 am on Wednesday 26 May\, to greet the G7 Trade Ministers with the message – drop the patents\, save lives!\n\nThe UK Government continues to block the proposal to suspend patents on vaccines and treatments at the World Trade Organisation. SUMMARY:People's Covid Inquiry: Profiteering from the people's health?
DESCRIPTION:A striking feature of the government’s pandemic response has been the contracting out of Covid-related services to private companies. This has been without the usual tendering processes and without any transparency around contract details including costs. Despite a number of contracts failing spectacularly (e.g. Serco’s contract to run NHS Test-and-Trace) and some pre-Covid contracts such as that with NHS Logistics being exposed as wholly inadequate\, public contract funding has been differentially awarded to Conservative party donors and close contacts. \nWe will hear about the reliance on and scale of private contracts during the pandemic\, and the level of pre-pandemic outsourcing and privatisation. How did this contribute to the failures in response?  We will hear about legal challenges on behalf of the taxpayer in relation to Covid contracts. And from staff experience\, we will hear about the dangers and anxieties caused by shortages of PPE\, and the worries of staff around decisions to outsource contracts. \nTHE PANEL: \n\nMichael Mansfield QC (chair)\nProfessor Neena Modi\, Dr. Tolullah Oni\nDr. Jacky Davis\nLorna Hackett Barrister (Counsel to the Inquiry)\n\nWITNESSES: \nDavid McCoy | Professor of Global Health Medicine\, Institute of Population Health Sciences\, QMUL; Centre for Health and the Public Interest \nDr David Wrigley | GP in Carnforth\, North Lancs\, Deputy Chair of the BMA\, co-author of ‘NHS for Sale’ and ‘NHS SOS’ \nA representative of Foxglove\, a group campaigning against secrecy of coronavirus NHS data contracts  \nDr Michelle Dawson | NHS Consultant Anaesthetist\, trustee of the Healthcare Workers’ Foundation charity (previously ‘Heroes’)

Even prior to the pandemic there was strong evidence that racism and inequality in educational\, employment and economic opportunities\, as well as in access to housing and healthcare\, had major differential effects on the health of BAME communities. These issues were compounded during the pandemic\, with particularly acute consequences for keyworkers who could not work at home\, and who kept transport\, health and other essential services running throughout. The impacts of Covid have also fallen differentially on women in many important ways. \nThe next session of the People’s Covid Inquiry asks: was there any serious appraisal of risk for sections of our society who experience inequalities and discrimination? What has the outcome been and how has the Government responded? \nIn order to answer these questions and to learn lessons\, in this session we are listening to a researcher on the differential impact of Covid on the BAME health workers and we will hear testimony about the experience of BAME frontline staff and the differential impacts of Covid-19 upon migrants and upon women. Evidence is also available from the work done by Independent SAGE\, the Fenton Review and health unions. \n\n\nTHE PANEL: \nMichael Mansfield QC (chair); Professor Neena Modi; Dr. Tolullah Oni; Dr. Jacky Davis; Lorna Hackett\, Barrister (Counsel to the Inquiry) \nWITNESSES: \n\nMary-Ann Stephenson | Director\, Women’s Budget Group\nKamlesh Khunti | Professor of Primary Care Diabetes and Vascular Medicine\, University of Leicester\, member of Independent SAGE\nDr Latifa Patel | British Medical Association (PC)\nAliya Yule | Migrants Organise

SUMMARY:People's Covid Inquiry | Session 5: Impact on frontline staff and key workers
DESCRIPTION:It became very clear at the outset of the pandemic that the UK Government needed to radically reappraise the roles of key workers in society. Our inquiry asks: were the roles of key workers and the risks they faced understood; and were they supported and protected? Were employment conditions\, in-work poverty and health and safety at work given adequate consideration by the Government? \n\n\nIn order to answer these questions we will hear the evidence of frontline staff working in the NHS\, in care services\, transport and education. Evidence will also be drawn from the work of bodies including Independent SAGE and assorted trade unions and professional associations across these sectors. \n\nPANEL: \nMichael Mansfield QC (chair)\, Professor Neena Modi\, Dr. Tolullah Oni\, Dr. Jacky Davis\, Lorna Hackett Barrister (Counsel to the Inquiry) \nWITNESSES: \n\n\nDr Chidi Ejimofo | NHS consultant in Emergency Medicine \n\n\nProf. Raymond Agius | Professor Emeritus of Occupational and Environmental Medicine\, University of Manchester \n\n\nUnjum Mirza | Secretary\, Victoria Line Branch of ASLEF union \n\nKirsty Brewerton | NHS Clinical Sister\, Acute Medicine

SUMMARY:Children's mental health and the Covid crisis
DESCRIPTION:Over the past year\, much of our time and energy has been rightly consumed by the Covid crisis. However\, the NHS has faced a number of other crises that must now be addressed more actively. Young people have been struggling to access effective mental health support for a long time. Even before Covid-19 arrived\, more than 100\,000 young people were being turned away from Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) every year. Over the past year\, this number has risen exponentially. Many children are now turning to adverse coping strategies\, where others are unfortunately not coping at all. \nThe CAMHS crisis encapsulates the overarching struggles of society in general. These include education\, the difficulties faced by families and parents and staffing issues – particularly the devastating impact of understaffing. This meeting aims to bring together the many elements in our society that can adversely impact children and subsequently wider society.\n\nPlease join us for the discussion.\n\n*NSV public meetings will now take the form of interactive meetings where all are attendees are welcome to actively contribute.*

SUMMARY:People's Covid Inquiry | Session 4: Disability and social care in the pandemic
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER: https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_DbK_8P-rRgm5VVsUebTKbw \nOver 140\,000 people have now died in the UK of Covid-19. Shockingly\, six in ten people who have died have been disabled\, and more than 35\,000 people have died in care homes. Social care has been stretched to breaking point\, and heavy care responsibilities have fallen upon families and loved ones\, invariably falling most heavily on women. \nWas this scale of death\, long-term illness and distress inevitable? Why were Covid-positive patients discharged into care homes on three separate occasions? Was the UK social care sector well-equipped to meet the pandemic\, and could nothing more have been done to enable social care workers to protect both themselves and those depending on their care? \nThe Panel\n\nMichael Mansfield QC (chair)\, Professor Neena Modi\, Dr. Tolullah Oni\, Dr. Jacky Davis\, Lorna Hackett Barrister (Counsel to the Inquiry) \nWitnesses \n\nDr Rachel Clarke (Consultant in Palliative Care Medicine)\nEllen Clifford (Disabled People Against the Cuts)\nProfessor Martin McKee (Independent SAGE)\nCarol Thompson (Social Care Worker and North West Unison activist)\n\nUse the link below to register. SUMMARY:Patients Not Passports: Taking Action to End the Hostile Environment
DESCRIPTION:Event organised by MedAct in partnership with Greater Manchester Keep Our NHS Public and Migrants Organise. \nRegister here \nThis is part two of a two-part event. Part one is here. \nThe NHS as we know it is under threat. Hostile Environment immigration policies have eroded the universal founding principles of our health service\, restricting access to care for migrants\, introducing up-front charging\, sharing patient data with the Home Office and denying care to hundreds of thousands of people. Greater Manchester Keep Our NHS Public is campaigning for free access to the NHS for anyone in the country\, regardless of immigration status\, and against the use of the NHS as a tool for immigration control. \nThis event is for those of you who potentially would like to get involved in the campaign: we will tell you what we’ve done so far\, but also hear your ideas and have a lot of time for discussion. It will be an opportunity to explore how you can get involved\, and for action-planning so that we can take forward the campaign to end the Hostile Environment in the NHS together.

SUMMARY:Conference: The Pandemic and Privatisation - how to fight back
DESCRIPTION:The pandemic has been a goldmine for private contractors and management consultants. \n• Billions have been signed away in questionable contracts with no scrutiny or accountability\, and billions wasted on contracts that will not deliver\, or result in unusable PPE and defective tests.\n• Such huge sums that could have been wisely spent on expanding and adapting NHS services and public health networks as assets for the future were instead frittered away on failed contracts with Serco\, Sitel\, Deloitte.\n• Parallel private systems have been set up\, that do not properly connect with GP and hospital services\, including ‘lighthouse’ laboratories for testing and processing tests – which we now hear are to be fully privatised.\n• Thousands of NHS beds have been closed\, with thousands more lying unoccupied as winter pressures combine with further waves of Covid infection – while private hospitals have been gifted up to £10bn in contracts to treat NHS patients until 2024. \nBut while the private sector celebrates its new-found riches\, the fiascos of failed private services have been exposed to millions. \nPrivatised test and trace systems have become byword for failure\, just as poor standards of hospital cleaning epitomised the failures of the first outsourced contracts in the 1980s. \nThe question is how health unions and campaigners can work together and develop the right publicity and information to show the folly and expose the waste and inefficiency of privatisation and outsourcing? \nJoin us for an online conference on February 25\, called by Health Campaigns Together\, working in partnership with the health unions UNISON\, Unite and GMB\, the PDA union\, the TUC\, Keep Our NHS Public\, the NHS Support Federation (NHS For Sale)\, and The Lowdown. \nThursday February 25 2021\, 6.30-8.30pm \nRegister at Eventbrite

Continued privatisation is being rolled out\, often by stealth\, for example through the forced introduction of so-called ‘Integrated Care Systems’.  At this event we will be joined by experienced campaigners\, who can help us plan how in Suffolk\, we can organise to resist the NHS sell-off and fight to reclaim social care as a public service.”

SUMMARY:Bristol Protect Our NHS protests against Tory corruption\, croynism and privatisation
DESCRIPTION:On Friday 11 December Protect Our NHS at 11AM will hold a protest outside the Weston Super Mare constituency office of John Penrose\, the government’s Anti-Corruption Champion to flag the role of his partner\, Dido Harding\, who oversees the £12 billion test and trace programme. Members of the group will unveil a banner which says – John Penrose\, Anti-Corruption Champion\, how did your unqualified wife Dido Harding get her unadvertised job as head of Test and Trace. \nThe protest is part of an ongoing effort to draw attention to the government’s unsavoury practice of awarding contracts to private firms\, such as Serco\, Sitel and Deloitte\, with close political and personal ties with government ministers and advisors without adhering to any well-established tendering process. Other groups such as Keep Our NHS Public\, Open Democracy and We Own it have been campaigning on the issue\, especially underscoring the wasteful spending of taxpayers’ money on companies which fail to deliver on the 80% testing and tracing target. \nAccordingly Protect Our NHS is making the following demands: \n● End the cronyism and corruption in the awarding of COVID-19 contracts; \n● Sack Serco and other private companies running the incompetent test and trace system. Instead give the money to local public health authorities which have a far better track record in carrying out testing and tracing functions; and \n● Call on the relevant Parliamentary Committee to hold hearings on the government’s awarding of COVID-19 related contracts.

SUMMARY:Zero Covid National Day of Action
DESCRIPTION:Zero Covid Campaign have called a national day of action on Saturday 5 December \nAS ENGLISH LOCKDOWN ENDS: DAY OF ACTION ON 5 DEC FOR MORE EFFECTIVE MEASURES \nDoctors\, scientists\, students and trade unionists are planning coordinated protests across Britain on Saturday 5 December to protest the UK government’s reckless return to regional tier measures and to demand a Zero Covid strategy. It will be many months before most UK citizens are vaccinated\, and there is not yet evidence whether the vaccines prevent transmission as well as protecting against illness\, so more effective measures are needed to reduce community infection near to zero. This would save lives and livelihoods\, and avoid on-off lockdowns dragging on for months. Key figures from the British Medical Association and the Independent SAGE panel of expert scientists\, workplace safety campaign Hazards\, the President of the National Union of Students\, the General Secretary of the train drivers’ union ASLEF and the food manufacturing Bakers’ Union and a raft of local trade union bodies backed the call. \nYou can find a full list of events here.
