‘No Jab, No Job’ – Discussing Mandatory Vaccinations For Care Workers

12th August 2021 - 11:00 AM - 1:00 PM

Care and Support Workers ORGANISE! are hosting a meeting on mandatory vaccinations following the recent debate in parliament and the government’s decision to implement new regulations instructing that everyone working in CQC-registered care homes must be fully COVID-19 vaccinated with both doses or face losing their jobs.

The new legislation means from October – subject to Parliamentary approval and a subsequent 16-week grace period – anyone working in a CQC-registered care home in England for residents requiring nursing or personal care must have 2 doses of a COVID-19 vaccine unless they have a medical exemption.

Then-Health Secretary Matt Hancock said it was a “sensible and reasonable step” and he would consult on extending it to the NHS.

The “liberty of non-vaccination” is a principle established in UK law since 1898. Compulsory vaccination has not been attempted since in the UK.

We will be joined by an excellent panel exploring the nuances of this debate and examining what this means for our ‘individual freedoms’ as care workers but also the possible impacts on a sector which already faces a staffing and funding crisis.

Speakers:
> Professor Lydia Hayes – Head of Kent Law School
> Dr Emma Runswick – British Medical Association Council Member
> Dr Allin-Khan Labour MP for Tooting – Invited but not confirmed
> Polly Smith (Care Worker) – Care and Support Workers ORGANISE!
> Mike Dixon (Support Worker) – Care and Support Workers ORGANISE!
