This year will mark 20 years since Keep Our NHS Public was founded. In that time, we have grown to a large organisation with thousands of activists and local branches all over the UK.
Our campaigning has made a positive difference, and in many cases we have helped overturn or delay damaging plans. Through our work, often with union and other allies, over the last 20 years we have:
Saved 10 hospitals and many more services from threatened closure
Challenged privatisation policy including the Judicial Review challenge to the government on accountable care organisations in 2018
Challenged the takeover of GP services by US corporation Centene, though with partial success
Held the People’s Covid Inquiry in 2021 chaired by human rights lawyer Michael Mansfield KC, and our report ‘Misconduct on Public Office’ referred to the culpability of senior politicians.
Through our trade union-facing Health Campaigns Together, mobilised with other allies and health unions in 2017 and 2018 the largest ever demonstrations in support of the NHS
Mounted a hugely popular petition with 1.4 million signatures to campaign against Trump and NHS trade deals in 2019
Launched SOS NHS in 2022 which is the largest ever coalition standing together to defend our NHS, including 18 national trade unions.
Our spokespeople are featured in national mainstream press and media, print and online, television and radio on average 10-15 times per month.
Launched our Restore the People’s NHS campaign, and producing the informative and popular pamphlet that we have distributed to MPs, Trade Union leaders, activists, cultural figures, striking NHS staff and more.
